Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise as a young child. Aunt Denise worked the night shift as nurse so she could pursue her love for art literature and theater in the daytime. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay learned by example that art could be a vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was socially conscious and taught that she could express her thoughts through the arts. Although DuVernay lived in Compton with her parents, she lived at Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's father remembered watching the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. DuVernay was influenced by the summers she spent in Selma, and later directed an documentary on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in the year 1990. In the year 1990, she graduated from Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was still in university. She worked as a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to examine the garbage at the home of a member on the jury. She was disappointed by the journalism assignments she was assigned and chose to switch over to the field of public relations.
